To fight climate change and increase food security in cities across Nepal, Sagarika Bhatta came up with the simple yet innovative idea of creating urban farms – on the rooftops.
Sagarika Bhatta has worked in the climate change sector for many years and has always been concerned about the conditions in Nepal’s cities – the population density, pollution, and food insecurity, particularly in the Kathmandu valley that is extremely vulnerable to the impact of climate change.
“I’ve always wanted to bring change to urban settings in order to improve the environment and make cities greener and more sustainable,” she explains.
Growing upwards
To tackle these urgent challenges, she created Urban Roof Farm Services that provides services and equipment for urban citizens, organisations, institutions, and hotels to create their own roof farms. Based on vertical agriculture and new technologies, Urban Roof Farm Services optimises production in limited spaces to help participants grow their own food and eat healthier organic produce, while fostering sustainability.
Green spaces in cities also help regulate the climate by absorbing greenhouse emissions, improving air quality and cooling down buildings.
In 2020, the company helped set up farms on 24 buildings in the Kathmandu Valley. But Sagarika Bhatta has set her sights much higher. In 10 years, she hopes to scale the business to establish more rooftop farms across Nepal’s cities.
