The Yawanawá communities have established governance and a plan to protect their well-being in the Gregorio River indigenous reserve in the Brazilian Amazon.
Many initiatives exist to support indigenous communities in the Amazon basin in the face of deforestation and threats to traditional ways of life. According to Tashka and Laura Yawanawá, a vision to guide these communities into the future is needed. They are convinced that it must be based on their own origins and knowledge of their ancestors, their unique vision of the world. With the support of Forest Trends, they have developed The Yawanawá Life Plan. This living document is a strategy that guarantees the existence of the Yawanawá people on their territory, based on their lives and history.
A participatory and autonomous approach
The leaders met in different consultative workshops to develop a common vision for the future. It encompasses all the dimensions necessary to move forward on this path: strenghtening their cultural identity, preserving their traditions and building a sustainable economy without destroying the environment, flourishing alongside the forest.
Respecting gender and generation balance, a Council represents all the villages involved. It plays a guiding role and is consulted on important decisions. The aim now is to implement this life plan, including a priority project to process and trade açaí to national and international markets.
