Safeguarding local communities’ heritage

Support this project
Project begin: 11/11/2016

Within the framework of the efforts for the protection of the Palmeraie Marrakech, in 2007, a local conservation plan was set up to mobilize local people to protect palm groves. This project is piloted by the team committed to education to sustainable development under the umbrella of the Mohammed VI Foundation for environmental protection and focuses on embarking farmers, women and children in particular to get committed to preserve the Palmeraie ecosystem.

This programme utterly relies on people’s goodwill and energy locally. It sparked the creation of the observatory of the palm grove, run by local residents.

Initial Problem

The Palm Grove of Marrakech has a fragile ecosystem. The local communities are leaving because of the desertification and poor resource management threatened, even more, the Palm Grove.

The positive impacts that the project has made:

Farmers, women and children of the region were able to gain and share more skills and fight the desertification of their lands, obtain access too and preserve clean water and got ideas on how to lead a sustainable lifestyle, respectful of nature and its resources.  Moreover, local communities share a vision on how to respond to climate change to protect their ecosystem while using ancestral knowledge for resource management as well as modern tools and methods.

The impacted areas and population:

The commitment, responsibility and gain in skills of local women, farmers and young people contribute to the result of the Palm Grove Conservation program. They also spread knowledge with the inhabitants of Marrakech through literacy and teaching about environmentally friendly practices which greatly favoured knowledge sharing and natural resources management.

The obstacles and challenges

Local people had to fight against the exodus and convince young people in particular to change their way of living. Now, local communities can enjoy the result of their hard work.
