Cooperating to educate for sustainability is the principle of the Red Campus Sustentable network. A pioneering citizen initiative that enables higher education institutions to adapt to sustainability.
Because the higher education system is progressing too slowly in integrating sustainability, Red Campus Sustentable was launched in 2015 in Chile. The founders of this cooperative truly believe that by enriching educational processes around sustainability, with a holistic focus, it is possible to become caring and responsible citizens. They created this network to facilitate the promotion and communication of best practices between different actors in higher education in Chile and other Latin American countries.
Sharing ideas to improve practice
Red Campus Sustentable network works with 33 institutions and more than 40 experts. The actors involved in this cooperative collaborate by sharing ideas to improve sustainable practices. They generate an active commitment to improve the quality of life, protect the ecosystem and preserve natural resources for future generations. The network operates on a systemic and flexible working model adapted to the Latin American context. With clear objectives, it develops different public policies and tools to facilitate a transition to sustainability.
Red Campus Sustentable help to accelerate and facilitate the adaptation to sustainability in higher education institutions and launch different projects. APL (Acuerdo de Producción Limpia II or Cleaner Production Agreement II) to reduce the greenhouse effect. RESIES (Reporte y Evaluación de la Sustentabilidad en Instituciones de Educación Superior), an online database and reporting platform, to help institutions in their transition to sustainability, generating a roadmap.
Red Campus Sustentable network has been involved in more than 50% of undergraduate enrolments and its goal is to exceed 70%. It also aims to integrate other higher education institutions in Latin America for greater impact.
