What effects are climate variability and change having on our ecosystems? To find out, Juan Mauricio Castaño Rojas, associate professor at Colombia’s Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, set up a dedicated research centre to explore and forecast impacts on water regulation and biodiversity.

In Latin America, little research has been carried out into the effects and impact of variability and climate change on our ecosystems. Determined to fill in some of the gaps, Juan Mauricio Castaño Rojas at Colombia’s Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira launched the Lisbran project. The aim? Firstly, create a baseline study looking at the ecosystem services of water regulation and biodiversity within the Quebrada Dali watershed. Secondly, develop an advance warning system based on adaptive modelling to anticipate change. Thirdly, ensure the watershed’s long-term sustainability.

To develop the research centre, the Water Supply Services Company of the town of Pereira signed a research agreement with the university, making available a 250-hectare property, known as “Hacienda Lisbonne”, dedicated to conserving cloud forests and wetlands.

The research carried out takes a long-term approach to measuring climate and hydrological variables with the aim of consolidating a database of information to inform local government decision-making. Given that awareness and environmental education are also important to preservation efforts, the research site also organises educational activities open to young researchers, community leaders, school children and students. It has been visited by more than 1500 people over the last 5 years.
