Involving communities in the far north of Russia in waste collection expeditions while taking samples for scientific research on microplastics is the particularity of the eco-patrol project.
The most effective way to educate people about the environment, according to the team of the Clean North movement, is to participate in activities. To address the problem of heavily polluted coasts with household waste in the Arkhangelsk region, these citizens launched the Eco-patrol project. These are collective events organized to clean and collect waste in hard-to-reach places and on the shores of reservoirs of the Arkhangelsk region and the Arctic zone. This is done with the help of special off-road equipment (ATVs, motor boats, all-terrain vehicles), powerboats and watercraft (kayaks, catamarans, paddle boards). With these activities, the local population of the Arkhangelsk region has developed a culture of outdoor recreation as well as a culture of separate waste collection.
Contribute to research on the impact of microplastics
During each expedition, a team of young scientists from different universities in Russia and Europe examines the water bodies for the presence of microplastics and takes samples. In the future, all data is transferred to the Arctic Biomonitoring Laboratory of the Northern Arctic Federal University for analysis on an infrared spectrometer.
The objectives: to contribute to scientific research on the impact of microplastics on the environment and the human body, and to develop measures to prevent further pollution of water bodies. Videos of theses expeditions are used in schools for educational purposes.
