Teachers Mohd Sayuti Hassan and Rahimi Binti Che Aman are convinced that students have a key role to play in developing a “sustainable culture” across the campus and in the community. To achieve this, they imagined an innovative class format at University Sains Malaysia.

As a respond to low levels of awareness about environmental challenges, in 2014, teachers at University Sains Malaysia developed an optional sustainability class for their first-year programme. Coordinated by Dr Mohd Sayuti Hassan, the class aims to transform students into change agents through concrete projects linked to saving energy, managing food waste, recycling and reducing our carbon footprint.

Sustainable development projects run by students

Organised into groups, the students work with the university to bring their sustainable development projects to life. Beyond this course, the University Sains Malaysia is committed to the ecological transition and becoming a sustainability-led institution, from teaching to research.

Since being launched, the class has attracted a growing number of students, demonstrating their interest in the environment. Around 500 students sign up each semester at the main campus at Penang. The class is also available at the university’s two other Malaysian campuses.

Modhi and Rahimi are looking to raise funds to support this class, enable students to get even more involved in the local community and potentially commercialise promising projects.
