“Cool without scales! This is the original program of the NGO Yayasan Penyu Indonesia. For these volunteers, saving the endangered turtles in Indonesia means fighting, on both the supply and demand sides, the trade in products made from their shells.
The killing of turtles and the trade in their shells has been officially banned in Indonesia. However, trade in products made from the shells of hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) continues. This is one of the most endangered species of marine turtle. Its decline is massive in Indonesia.
The “Cool without scales” project, launched by the NGO Yayasan Penyu Indonesia, aims to save these turtles from extinction. By fighting this trade on both the supply and demand sides. Various actions are being taken to discourage the purchase of this type of product: the creation of a network of ambassadors in the travel industry, information campaigns, and operations on social networks. These campaigns are aimed at national and international tourists and local residents to make them aware of the negative effects of purchasing these products. Among other things, by popularising the tagline “Cool without scales”.
Fighting the trade in turtle shell products
On the supply side, the NGO is addressing online shopping platforms where turtle shell products are offered, initiating law enforcement by establishing relationships with authorities.
Yayasan Penyu Indonesia provides a certification approach to reward shop owners who commit to stop selling turtle shell products.
Finally, it is conducting ‘before and after’ market research in key locations identified in advance (Bali, Yogyakarta, Nias) to measure the impact of the program. To achieve sustainable results and prevent further decline of the hawksbill turtle population, efforts must continue and be sustained.
