Is information about climate change available to all? During a school trip to Iran, 18-year-old Sophia Kianni realised that this isn’t necessarily the case. And so, she created Climate Cardinals to source and translate climate information in 100+ languages.
During a school trip to Iran, Sophia Kianni was shocked that pollution was so bad that she can’t see the stars. Alarmed by the situation in her country of origin and across the Middle East, where temperatures are rising much faster than the world average, she realised that her friends and family knew very little about climate change. During her research, she also found that most scientific literature was written in English. So, she started translating it into Farsi.
Widening access to information on the climate
This was just beginning. To make climate movement more accessible to non-English speakers, she decided to set up Climate Cardinals. This international youth-led non-profit already has 6,000 young, passionate volunteers sourcing and translating information on the climate into more than 100 languages. High schools and universities around the world have implemented their own “chapters” (local branches) with support from Climate Cardinals. The organisation has also partnered with translation non-profits and professional organisations to provide quality checks.
The aim? Multiply their impact to help translate and disseminate environmental information within communities.
