The Chesapeake Monitoring Cooperative connects science initiatives to improve understanding of the health of the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Launched in 2015, the cooperative collaborates with various partners to collect and share data on water quality and living resources. This project covers the entire Chesapeake Bay watershed, including Maryland, the District of Columbia, and parts of Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York. This monitoring community encompasses a wide range of organizations from individuals and neighborhood associations to regional non-profit organizations and companies.

Sharing knowledge to restore the bay

The Chesapeake Bay region has many long-standing community-based science programs throughout the region. There are over 100 active monitoring groups! A great variety of resources and experiences!

The main objective of the first six years of this project was to ensure cohesion of purpose and consistency of approach. The cooperative has created a data center, the Chesapeake Data Explorer. This data explorer allows people to connect with other monitoring groups locally and internationally, to interact and share knowledge. The team has successfully engaged state agencies across the watershed to use the data to help achieve the Bay’s restoration goals.

This project just received a second cooperative agreement with the Chesapeake Bay Program to continue to the work for another 6 years. The focus over the next few years will be to diversify the monitoring base and ensure that the Chesapeake Monitoring Cooperative network is an inclusive space for everyone in the watershed.
