“Sadly, even if we held a beach cleanup every day on every beach around the world it still wouldn’t be enough to cleanup the Ocean. Education is a vital part of a multi-pronged approach to ecological restoration.” That’s why the Ocean Blue team created Blue Schools in 2021.

Ocean Blue was founded in Oregon by father and son, Richard and Fleet Arterbury, tribal members of the Choctaw Nation. The non-profit organisation was built around a vision that the world’s oceans, beaches and rivers will once again be pristine, self-sustaining ecosystems where wildlife and human communities can coexist and thrive. It engages with local communities and governments to mobilize and coordinate resources, to educate youth, and to reconnect populations to their local environment.

Since its creation in 2012, members and volunteers have been cleaning beaches and riverbanks.  However, action must be taken at the source: education! The Blue Schools program was therefore launched in 2021.

Take care of the ocean from our own backyards

Blue Schools is a K-12 STEM curriculum that teaches children and young adults to become active environmental stewards, and is a centerpiece program of Ocean Blue Project. Developed in collaboration with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) and align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), Blue Schools content and curriculum is customized to meet the unique needs of individual classrooms, communities, and watersheds.

Through Blue Schools, students discover the importance of their local watershed, learn about the pollutants that can contaminate local drinking water, and make a holistic connection between their own environment and the long-term health of the local water supply, wildlife, and our one world ocean. By helping to understand the connection between their watershed and the oceans, Blue Schools inspire students to take care of the ocean from their own backyards.

The program pilot in 2021 reached 1,200 students in 40 Oregon classrooms. It will expand to 200 schools per year over the next two years in Oregon and Florida, with a long-term vision to reach every student around the United States.
