Fusing climate-smart technologies, sustainable education and the green economy, Otis Jeffers is championing bees at the UNESCO St Mary’s Biosphere Reserve on the Caribbean Islands of St Kitts and Nevis.
In the Caribbean island country of Saint Kitts and Nevis, climate change and biodiversity loss are gradually destroying natural habitats for bees. Bee pollination activity has declined considerably affecting indigenous plants and crop cultivation. Younger generations have lost interest in beekeeping. The result? A drastic decline in this form agriculture and very low honey production.
To halt the decline of beekeeping and protect biodiversity, Otis Jeffers and local agricultural association Produce Delight launched Bee the Buzz of the Reserve. By sharing local knowledge and promoting pollinators for crop production and various honeybee products, the team aims to increase local apicultural output.
This locally driven and managed project places sustainable education at the core of its model. The association organises awareness events and is looking to develop practical apicultural skills in primary and secondary schools. These training sessions will encourage young people and the entire local community to participate and potentially even develop their own apiaries. Thus, creating new opportunities to become beekeeping entrepreneurs.
Would you like to help Otis Jeffers increase honey production, involve younger generations and contribute to the green economy?
